Fabric Friday!

These are my fabric inspirations for the next week! Thanks to Hawthorne Threads for being one of the best online fabric stores in the business (in my opinion.)

Fabric Cat is Covered in Fabric

Remember yesterday when I told you the story of my fabric basket fail? My original idea was to create this fabric basket for my lighting cords, then "hide" the basket with an adorable 2-D or 3-D kitty. Because who doesn't like kitties?

So, after I created my ridiculous pink and green pouf, I was somewhat disappointed in its lack of basket-shape, so I thought if I just made this awesome cat thing, then nobody would notice that my cord pouf was not a basket!

I made a cat all right. A rainbow-tailed, big-nosed, smiling, furry, happy cat!

I cut the cat tail, body, nose, ears, and paws out of craft weight interfacing. This stuff is thick & sturdy, as I had intended to have this cat sit upright, attached to a fabric basket.

I attached the fabrics to the interfacing using the iron, then hot glued all the edges to the backsides of all the shapes. I hope that makes sense.

I hot glued the ears, nose, tail, and feet on. The I cut a piece of glitter paper into a small heart and glued it on the fur. I cut a small length of this awesome sparkly gold bias tape I had, and glued it on as a collar.
I sewed the buttons on by hand, and used the machine to create the cat's big smile.

After all was said and done, I thought, damn, this is way to cool to put on the floor.

So I stuck the cat in an empty frame I had laying around. It was tough trying to find the right background color to accent the cat properly. Life is tough when your fur is five million different colors.

I did not have plain black or white paper. All I have in the house is piles and piles of scrapbooking paper. I thought this blue paper from Amy Buter looked the best, but I'm still not happy. (Don't mind the wrinkle on the right side...I'll fix that...one day.)

Now I have an awesome piece of new art that makes me giggle a bit inside every time I see it!

Do any of your projects turn out different from how you imagined?
Do they ever turn out more awesome!?

Fabric Yo-Yos & an Art Box

Last month I participated in an art collection curated by the Columbia Festival of the Arts. The collection was called 'Boxes and Bowls'; as you can imagine, the two types of art pieces featured in the collection were wooden boxes & wooden bowls. Artists living in the city of Columbia, and the surrounding areas, were asked to participate in the collection. All our pieces, were featured at the Columbia Festival of the Arts, and then for the remainder of June the collection traveled around to other arts festivals in the area.

I chose to art-up one of the wooden boxes for the collection. After a few days of hanging out with the plain wooden box, inspiration stuck and I decided to decorate the box with fabric yo-yos and vintage buttons. Half the fabric I used for the yo-yos was vintage fabric from my stash, and half of the fabric was modern designer fabric.

From this project I have drawn inspiration for anther product I am thinking of adding to my etsy shop!
Please stay tuned for more exciting items to hit my shelves!

Ruffle Clutches

Happy Friday to everybody!

I've been a little lazy this morning, so this post will be quick. After I finish showing off my Ruffle Clutches I will fly off to my sewing room to whip up a couple of my original patchwork pillows. I just received some awesome white cotton/linen blend fabric from Sew Mama Sew. While I dislike cutting into fresh fabric, I do love creating! The first cut is always the hardest!

I found this awesome tutorial from the talented Noodlhead
I thought they would be the perfect travel pouches for my little sister. She left for Scotland earlier this January for a year-long residency teaching life skills to special needs adults.

The wristlet handle attachment on one of the pouches is my own design.
The tutorial from Noodlehead is very straightforward and easy to follow. I recommend that you hop right over to her blog and whip yourself up a cute little ruffled pouch!

The second pouch I created. I used Amy Butler fabric, a vintage zipper, & I designed my own clipped wristlet handle.

I was quite proud of my handle!

The small, purple pouch is the first one I made. I only had two zippers in my stash when I made these, both vintage. So, I had to scale the size of one of the pouches to fit my zipper! The smaller pouch is made with Tula Pink and Anna Maria Horner fabrics.
